Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas shared his thoughts on Jamal Murray’s recent four-year, $208 million contract extension with the Denver Nuggets. During an episode of Gil’s Arena, Arenas expressed surprise that despite Murray’s crucial role for Denver, he has not earned individual accolades like All-Star or All-NBA selections.
“When you think about his career, he made no All-Star games? He was not an All-NBA player? That’s crazy,” Arenas said, via ClutchPoints. He emphasized that Murray’s contributions, especially in clutch situations, justify the significant extension from the Nuggets.
Murray, who had been on a five-year, $158 million contract, averaged 21.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 6.5 assists per game last season. Despite these solid numbers, the Canadian guard has yet to be named an All-Star, a point that Arenas highlighted as surprising given his impact.
Arenas went on to call the extension “cheap” in relation to Murray’s value to the team. “A guy that has so much and he does so much for the team, and he doesn’t get the accolades and awards. So, this is cheap for what they get, right?” Arenas said.
The former NBA guard also praised Murray’s ability to step up in critical moments. “You have a guaranteed closer. He hits big shots,” Arenas added.
