Tyronn Lue, head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers and assistant coach for Team USA, reflected on the national team’s readiness during the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

Despite boasting a formidable roster last year, Team USA faltered, failing to win gold or even medal, finishing fourth after a defeat against Canada.

This year’s squad features just two returning players, Anthony Edwards and Tyrese Haliburton, alongside seasoned NBA veterans like LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Jayson Tatum, Devin Booker, and Joel Embiid, among others.

Lue emphasized the stark differences between international and NBA play, highlighting the physicality allowed in FIBA competitions compared to the NBA’s more restricted style.

As part of Team USA’s coaching staff under Steve Kerr, Lue discussed the team’s adjustments and learnings from their international experiences.

“Over there (internationally) the game is different,” Lue said, via Joe Vardon of The Athletic. “Here (in the NBA), you can’t really touch guys, can’t be physical. Over there (Team USA) found out that they can be physical, they can run guys over, use your hands. It was just a different game, and we weren’t prepared for it. And (so) we talked about it (Friday night).”

With renewed focus and a blend of seasoned stars and rising talents, Team USA aims to reclaim its dominance in upcoming Olympic tournament.
