Former NBA star Kenyon Martin has voiced his displeasure over the Golden State Warriors’ treatment of Klay Thompson, calling it a “slap in the face.”
Martin’s comments come after Thompson’s departure from the Warriors following 13 years and four NBA championships.
Thompson approached free agency as the Warriors publicly expressed a desire to retain him, but they failed to offer a satisfactory deal.
In contrast, Golden State had previously rewarded Draymond Green with a four-year, $100 million contract.
Martin believes the Warriors should have given Thompson a new contract without negotiation, recognizing his significant contributions to the team.
“You paid Draymond [Green]…I’m a bucket, I’ve averaged more points than him, we don’t do none of this without me. And this is the thanks I get? It’s a slap in the face,” Martin said on Gil’s Arena.
Thompson, known for his sharpshooting, was instrumental in the Warriors’ success during his tenure.
Martin emphasized that Thompson’s scoring ability and clutch performances were crucial to the team’s achievements.
The perceived disparity in treatment between Thompson and Green has drawn criticism from the former player.
Thompson’s departure marks the end of an era for the Warriors, who will need to adjust without one of their key players.
