LeBron James is actively working to entice Klay Thompson to join the Los Angeles Lakers as the sharpshooter considers leaving the Golden State Warriors.
According to NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, James wasted no time contacting Thompson at the start of free agency, pushing for him to join the Lakers.
Thompson, a key figure in the Warriors’ four NBA championships over 13 years, is now weighing his options as he prepares to depart from Golden State.
Moreover, Thompson’s father Mychal has historical ties with the Lakers, having played for them and currently serving as a commentator.
NBA insider Brian Windhorst suggests the Lakers may need to execute a trade to secure Thompson, although the Dallas Mavericks remain an appealing alternative.
“He would be a perfect fit for the Lakers and the Lakers are trying to get it done and they may get it done,” Windhorst sad on ESPN’s Get Up. “The thing about where the Lakers are is with what they’ve got on their roster and what they’ve got to maneuver under the apron with eventually also re-signing LeBron James they’re a step away.
“They’ve got to make an intermediate trade. If they make that intermediate trade early today, I think the chances of them getting Klay increase.
“But I also think Klay is compelled by that match in Dallas. Sitting alongside Luka [Doncic] and Kyrie [Irving] would potentially be very comfortable for him and they have proven that they’re a serious contender. They are a better team than the Lakers even by adding him.
“He’s closer to a championship by joining the Mavericks in all likelihood than he is with the Lakers, pending any other moves that the Lakers might be able to pull off.”
Reportedly, the Warriors and Thompson have agreed to explore a sign-and-trade after failing to reach a contract agreement.
Thompson contributed 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game this past season, showcasing his scoring prowess and all-around skill set.
