Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green believes the Los Angeles Lakers should consider Monty Williams for their head coaching position.
Williams recently became available after being dismissed by the Detroit Pistons, despite signing a six-year, $72 million contract last summer.
Green emphasized Williams’ availability and the Lakers’ need for a head coach on “The Draymond Green Show.”
The four-time NBA champion highlighted Anthony Davis’ positive experience playing under Williams in New Orleans as a key factor.
“Monty Williams is now on the free agent market, and I know that the Los Angeles Lakers have been like, I don’t know what’s going on, but I know something’s going to happen fast because you got the draft coming up, you got free agency coming up,” he said, via HoopsHype.
“I know Anthony Davis loved Monty Williams when he played for him at New Orleans. So you ask yourself, should the Lakers consider Monty Williams? And I say, of course, you got to consider him 100%, especially with that tie.”
Green also expressed astonishment at the Pistons’ decision to fire Williams after just one season. He praised Williams for securing a substantial contract and the subsequent financial benefits despite the dismissal.
Despite Green’s strong endorsement, NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Williams is not looking to return to coaching immediately. The Lakers have other candidates in mind, with JJ Redick being the clear frontrunner for the position.
Earlier this month, the Lakers unsuccessfully pursued UConn’s Dan Hurley, showing their intent to find the right fit quickly.
