Weed-smuggler WNBA player Brittney Griner, who was swapped for the most dangerous Russian arms dealer, revealed in an interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts that during her time in a Russian prison cell, she grappled with suicidal thoughts on multiple occasions.

“I wanted to take my life more than once in the first weeks,” Griner said. “I felt like leaving here so badly.”

Griner shared that these thoughts emerged shortly after she was detained by Russian authorities for carrying vape cartridges in her luggage at a Moscow airport in February 2022.

She disclosed to Roberts that despite considering it, she ultimately didn’t act on those thoughts due to her concern that her body wouldn’t be returned to her family if she did.

“I can’t put them through that,” Griner said. “I have to endure this.”
