D’Angelo Russell is expected to become a free agent for the second consecutive year due to his impressive performance with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Russell had previously re-signed with the Lakers on a two-year contract worth $37 million, with the second year being a player option. As part of this agreement, Russell forfeited his ability to request a trade.

Despite the Lakers actively exploring trade options for Russell, they were unable to secure a deal with any interested teams before the trade deadline.

“I think almost certainly he will not pick up the option,” said Brian Windhorst on his podcast. “You work your whole life to be coming off a great season and being unrestricted.”
