Wes Unseld Jr. joins the recent trend of NBA head coach departures, following Adrian Griffin’s dismissal by the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Washington Wizards have parted ways with Unseld, moving him from the head coaching position to a front office advisory role.

According to Monumental Basketball President Michael Winger, “After several thoughtful conversations with Wes, we determined together that a change was needed for the benefit of the team.”

The official press release highlighted Unseld’s embodiment of valued organizational characteristics and expressed gratitude for his contributions. Unseld, appointed head coach on July 17, 2021, compiled a record of 77-130 (.372) in his two-and-a-half seasons.

In response to the change, Unseld stated, “I am grateful to have served as head coach of the Washington Wizards” and expressed anticipation for his new opportunity contributing to the organization’s continued progress.

The Wizards will announce an interim head coach shortly and initiate a thorough search during the offseason for a permanent replacement.
