Luka Doncic’s offensive prowess has solidified his position as one of the NBA’s most formidable players, yet concerns linger about his defensive performance on the court.

Amid recent criticism from former NBA star Kenyon Martin, who remarked on Doncic’s defensive struggles, Kyrie Irving, the star teammate of the Slovenian point guard, remains optimistic about Doncic’s potential defensive improvements with time and experience.

Recognizing the developmental process that many young players undergo, Irving emphasized the significance of gradually cultivating a defensive mindset and appreciating the value of defensive efforts in achieving overall success in the league.

Acknowledging the collective effort required to establish a strong defensive identity within the team, Irving’s remarks highlight the importance of consistent communication and a shared commitment to defensive excellence among players.

In a statement reported by Grant Afseth of Sports Illustrated, Irving shared his confidence in Luka Doncic’s potential for defensive improvement, stating, “Ah, man, he’s going to steadily improve [on defense]. Every young player in our league comes in, and I don’t think defense is the first thought in their mind. You have to grow into that role and really appreciate getting stops.”

Irving continued, “I think he’s at that point in his career, and I’m at that point in my career. I can speak for a lot of guys in this locker room. We just want to dominate game-to-game, and teams that win championships every single year, go take it. We know we have to set our defensive identity now. It starts with some of our best players, and so with Luka participating in that makes the communication on our team a lot easier.”
