As the San Antonio Spurs’ No. 1 draft pick, Victor Wembanyama is making waves in his first NBA training camp.

The 19-year-old center, who spent the previous season with Metropolitans 92 in France, recently discussed the notable differences between his experiences in France and his current journey with the Spurs.

During a press conference, Wembanyama shared how the transition had lightened his responsibilities. He humorously pointed out that he no longer had to play the role of a general manager, unlike his time in France.

In the Metropolitans 92, he was tasked with responsibilities beyond playing, such as ensuring the cleanliness of the practice floor and overseeing his teammates’ strength and conditioning routines.

“It’s changed from my days in France, for sure. I gotta worry about a sh*t ton of less stuff,” Wembanyama said, causing laughter among the journalists in attendance.

“Last year, I wasn’t just a player. I also was a GM. I had to make sure that the floor was clean before we had practice, I had to make sure my teammates were lifting. I had to make sure of a whole lot of stuff.”

Now with the Spurs, Wembanyama is relishing the fact that he can focus primarily on his basketball career. He appreciates the support system in place, with physiotherapists and coaches readily available to cater to his needs, regardless of the time of day.

“Now, I’m really more free. When I come in the morning, I know there’s gonna be physios and coaches taking care of me no matter the hour of the day. My mind is more at rest than last year,” he added.
