From the elite demonstrations made by Anthony Edwards in their utmost preparations for the World Cup, Steve Kerr finally declared it.
Following their 99-91 triumph against Germany to conclude their friendly bouts, Kerr made it known that the Minnesota Timberwolves cornerstone is the United States’ main weapon heading to Manila for this year’s FIBA Championships.
“He’s unquestionably the guy,” Team USA coach Steve Kerr said of Edwards, per Brian Windhorst of ESPN. “You can see he knows it. But now the team knows it, and I think the fans see it. … He genuinely believes he’s the best player in the gym every single night. And he’s such a dynamic young player. I think he’s taking a leap.”
Edwards, who cemented his place at the starting two-guard spot for the Americans, was on a tear for his nation upon averaging a team-high 19.2 points per game and shooting 51 percent from the field in the last five exhibition games of the U.S.
He posted 34 points against the Germans while leading the United States to a monstrous second-half rally en route to a gigantic 16-point comeback.
As such, these splendid showings will be truly tested once they finally land in the Philippines to start the World Cup. They will first face New Zealand on Aug. 26 to start their campaign in the tournament.
