After a shaky, underwhelming debut, Victor Wembanyama quickly turned heads around as he made a bounce-back effort this weekend.

Albeit bowing down against the Portland Trail Blazers (85-80), the phenom hammered a statement performance by registering 27 points, 12 boards, and three blocks on a 27-minute losing effort for the San Antonio Spurs.

Wembanyama redeemed himself from shooting an erratic 2-of-13 last Friday against the Charlotte Hornets as he tallied a much more efficient 9-of-14 field goal shooting (64%) to power San Antonio.

Sunday’s matchup could have been a thrilling showdown but Blazers prospect and No. 3 pick Scoot Henderson opted to sit out as he rested his shoulder. As such, the Thomas & Mack crowd can’t ask for a much better-delighting display of supreme talent now from Wembanyama following its rusty Summer League opener.

Frontcourt partner Dominick Barlow aided Wembanyama with 17 points and six boards, but Portland was way too overwhelming courtesy of Michael Devoe who had a game-high 29 points to go with five dimes.

The French star and the Spurs will look to be back in the win column as they will face the Washington Wizards on Tuesday.
