The Los Angeles Clippers aren’t guaranteeing Eric Gordon’s $21 million contract for the 2023-24 season, per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. This makes the veteran an unrestricted free agent heading to the off-season market.

The waiving is a necessary move for the Clippers on their already ballooning financial status. According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, the release of Gordon allowed L.A. to have a projected tax bill of $59 million instead of a hefty $169 million. The franchise is noted for having one of the highest payrolls in the league as they are $18 million over the set $165 million tax limit.

Acquired by the Clips in a midseason trade last 2022-23 from the Houston Rockets, Gordon went on to serve as a solid addition for them upon averaging 11 points, 2.1 assists, and 1.7 boards in 22 games. He also shot efficiently from trey by tallying 42.3 percent from distance (5.0 attempts).

It might not be that hot shooting swingman anymore dating back from his prime with the Houston Rockets, the former Sixth Man of the Year is still poised to receive significant offers most especially from contending solid teams.

Gordon would have entered the final year of his four-year, $75.5 million contract with Houston last 2019. Prior to his Clipper landing, he was linked up in trade rumors with the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns, and the New Orleans Pelicans.
