The Rockets have emerged as potential suitors for star guard Fred VanVleet, according to a report by Michael Grange of sportsnet.ca. The 29-year-old shooting guard, who declined his $22.8 million option for the 2023-24 season, has been expected to explore free agency and maximize his market value.
Previously, it was believed that VanVleet was seeking a deal worth around $30 million per year over three or four years. However, the Rockets, armed with ample cap space and the absence of state tax in Texas, could disrupt the expected course of negotiations.
Sources indicate that Houston is prepared to offer VanVleet a lucrative two-year contract worth $80 million, adding veteran stability to a roster filled with promising young players.
Last season, VanVleet averaged 19.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists in 36.7 minutes per game.
