The Philadelphia 76ers gave permission to the Houston Rockets to interview their assistant head coach Sam Cassell, per Jonathan Feigen of The Houston Chronicle.

Cassell, 53, stands as one of the most sought head coaching candidates around the league from the previous years and he is yet to take that lead role of the play-calling side.

As such, the former NBA star got ties in Houston. The club picked him as their prized young point man out of the 1993 NBA Draft, and he went on to help them on their back-to-back championship reigns in 1994 and 1995.

A member of three championship teams, Cassell is regarded as one of the most intelligent and crafty floor generals of his time. He played in eight different teams throughout his 16-year career and tallied an average of 15.7 points, 6.0 assists, 3.2 boards, and 45.4 percent shooting across 993 total games played.

After retiring following the 2008-09 season, Cassell remained involved in basketball as an assistant coach, first in the Washington Wizards (2009-2014) and then joined Doc Rivers’ staff in both the L.A. Clippers (2014-2020) and the 76ers.

The Rockets have already parted ways with Stephen Silas after a three-year partnership. They recently interviewed former L.A. Lakers coach Frank Vogel for their head coaching opening and are set to talk also with Golden State Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson and Toronto Raptors assistant Adrian Griffin.
