Stephen Curry got nothing but love and support for his still isolated teammate in Andrew Wiggins.
Following a thrilling 125-116 overtime win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday, Curry made it known to Wiggins that the entire Golden State Warriors Organization is just at his side whenever he needs some help amid his ongoing absence from team activities.
“Friend to friend, teammate to teammate, just sending him support. It’s a tough situation in terms of him being away for so long, but necessary,” Curry said, via NBC Sports’ Taylor Wirth. “Life is bigger than basketball. Whatever him and his family are going through, that’s all that matters. Whenever he’s ready to come back, I’m sure he will. That’s how he’s built in terms of being available. I know he’s missing the vibe and being with us and we miss him too.
“It’s interesting, there’s such a big spotlight on what we do on a daily basis and the fact that we have so many people that rely on us on a daily basis. To be able to give that energy back to your family is huge. We support him in all of that and whenever he’s ready to come back, he’ll be back.”
In the pregame of their match against the Bucks, head coach Steve Kerr revealed that Wiggins remains out as he is addressing an undisclosed personal matter. Kerr noted that there is no clear timetable of return for the forward, but he expressed his optimism that he’ll find his way back soon.
Wiggins has been inactive in the Warriors’ lineup since Feb. 13, missing 11-straight games up to this weekend. He is averaging 17.1 points and 5.0 rebounds in 37 games while shooting 47.3 percent from the field and draining a career-high 39.6 percent from three.
While his indefinite absence remains challenging with the reigning champs standing in a shaky playoff-seeding race, Curry and Golden State’s warming support and respect for privacy for Wiggins can’t be more admirable.
At the end of the day, life is bigger than basketball.
