Bob Myers potentially packing his bag out of the Golden State Warriors has made league circles intrigued to closely pay attention.
Per Anthony Slater, Marcus Thompson II, and Sam Amick of the Athletic, sources around Myers “are wondering whether – and even predicting that – his days with the Warriors are about to run out.”
And should the renowned general manager opts to leave, the likes of Washington Wizards, Phoenix Suns, and New York Knicks are teams that are “worth monitoring as possibilities” to cater to his demands for a brand new contract, with the L.A. Clippers also an emerging option
The significant buzz around Myers’ future started when ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported last December that both sides are yet to reach an extension, with the long-time executive’s contract set to expire following this season and talks of an extended partnership remaining at an impasse.
But earlier this month, the Warriors governor Joe Lacob cleared speculations by noting that the team offered two extension offers on Myers while expressing his desire to extend their ties with him beyond this season.
“Well, I’m not going to negotiate in the press, in the media, but I will say this: We love Bob,” Lacob said, via CBS Sports’ James Herbert. “He’s family. He’s been here, what, 10 years? Really got his big break here and made the most of it and deserves everything he gets. He has been paid, compensated very well up to the point, in the top three of general managers in this league even on his last deal. And all I will say is that it is not accurate that he has somehow not been offered anything. He’s been offered several — there have been two offers at this point. I’m trying. Have you ever known me not to be aggressive?”
Myers started his tenure on the Dubs franchise in 2011 as a promising assistant general manager. But after a year, the rest was history.
With Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson already in town, Myers slowly assembled and molded the team’s future foundation, picking Draymond Green in the 2012 Draft. The Warriors enjoyed relative success and had that turning point upon the coaching hiring of Steve Kerr in summer of 2015.
Golden State was splendidly assembled under Myers’ watch, winning the 2015 NBA title and proceeded to win back-to-back in a dynastic fashion for both 2017 and 2018 upon the invincible upgrade they made to convince Kevin Durant to take his talents to the Bay Area.
In last 2021-2022, Myers’ wonders as a crafty general manager made absolute magic with the Warriors being back on top once again. Now, the club remains in position to still contend for years to come and definitely slated for future with Jordan Poole and Andrew Wiggins at their side.
The result of his wonderful job as the Dubs’ top brain trust earned Myers two Executive of the Year honors and sky high acknowledgements as one of the best in business. The success he compiled and contributed as the team’s architect truly delivers a huge swing in his case to get paid in a rightful and lucrative amount.
Which makes the Warriors, who already have a staggering payroll, possibly contemplating with a dilemma of trying to retain him in the aftermath of this year’s campaign.
With impending huge decisions coming up, the Warriors are truly torned from their intents to continue contending while managing that ballooning salary cap. As such, with what Myers did for over a decade, he legitimately earned his chance to ask for more from the franchise.
