As they are currently on a deadlock with the Boston Celtics for the total number of championships won in NBA history at 17, Jeanie Buss stresses out the ultimate goal of the Los Angeles Lakers.
And that is to surpass them and become the winningest franchise in the association.
In an interview with Yahoo! Sports’ Chris Haynes, the team’s controlling owner has stated that she will carry his late father’s legacy, Dr. Jerry Buss, by pushing for the Lakers to be at the front of the leaderboard over the Celtics.
“When he started, he wanted to take on the Boston Celtics and all the winning they had done,” Buss said. “Now, with ring No. 17, we’re tied with the Celtics in terms of winning (championships). That’s what he set out to do. And certainly the work is not done yet. We have to continue that quest, and we’ll do so.”
Looking at the current state of both historic teams, the Cs no doubt have the upperhand to take the lead. But it’ll be unfair in not counting the Lakers’ ability to compete due to their resonating influence in the league and the power that LeBron James yields.
Boston had that golden opportunity to break away in the tiebreaker in last season’s NBA Finals, but they were outlasted by the battle-tested Golden State Warriors in six games. As such, upon the key additions of Malcolm Brogdon and Danilo Gallinari, they got even better, much determined to take that 18th banner in the upcoming basketball year.
Though doubts are still swirling on the side of Los Angeles due to their humiliating 2021-2022 season, hopes and morale are perhaps sky high now upon the new leadership installation under Darvin Ham.
