Kyrie Irving could have singed a contract extension with the Nets but the two sides failed to reach an agreement on the terms of a potential new deal.

Instead, the 2016 NBA champion opted into the player option of his current contract for the 2022-2023 season. According to NBA analyst Ric Bucher, Irving and the Nets could not reach agreement because the player want unusual conditions to be included.

Namely, Kyrie reportedly wanted to set a ceiling of how many games he has to play per season. That number is 60. In addition, he was asking to be allowed not to play back-to-back games.

Via HoopsHype:

Ric Bucher: Joe Tsai has already shown he’s willing to play hardball with Kyrie by taking a max extension off the table almost immediately. Now, part of that may be Kyrie’ doing. I’m told he wanted his new contract to guarantee he wouldn’t have to play more than 60 games in a season and would not have to play any back the backs which he apparently referred to as inhumane.
