Following the 76ers second round playoff exit Doc Rivers was asked by the media if he feels that his job is secure. Though he still has one year left on his current deal in Philadelphia, the possibility of him getting fired by Daryl Morey cannot be ruled out.
Should that happen, the Lakers would be immediately interested in Rivers’ services, says NBA insider Brian Windhorst. Even though Los Angeles has an extensive list of candidates, the Sixers head coach, who won a championship in 2008 with the Celtics, would be place on top that list.
“If Doc Rivers becomes free, the Los Angeles Lakers will definitely have interest,” Windhorst said on Get Up. “They have a process, they have numerous candidates, but he will immediately become a leading contender to get that Laker job.
“I don’t believe Doc Rivers is interested in coaching anywhere besides Philadelphia or Los Angeles next year. I think he would be totally fine returning.
“I think he would be totally fine not coaching and maybe working in broadcasting if that happens. But the Lakers would definitely want to get in front of him if he is let go by the Sixers.”
