Joel Embiid is an MVP candidate and one of the best bigs in the NBA. The Cameroonian center has come a long way to where he is now.

He started playing basketball late — at the age 15. A clip from a highschool game of Embiid getting under the basket on a fast break and turning the ball over has made rounds on the internet.

But he progressed fast and entered the NBA as the third overall pick by the 76ers in 2014. Looking back to his career prior to becoming a professional, Embiid is thankful for Andrew Wiggins who was his teammate in Kansas.

The Canadian forward, who later was the number one draft pick, drew a lot of attention from the scouts which also meant that other Kansas players, including Embiid had more eyes watch them as well.

“I’m always thankful of [Andrew Wiggins] because going into college he had so much hype,” said the Sixers star. “They were like, ‘He’s the next LeBron.’ I kinda used that to my advantage because we had so much scouts, every single day, come in to watch our practices. They were watching us and one day they were like, ‘Who’s that guy?
