Cleveland Cavaliers veteran point guard Ricky Rubio is exciting for a fresh start with the franchise, after he was acquired in a draft-day trade from the Timberwolves.

Rubio will have the chance to work alongside another young guard, after playing with Donovan Mitchell in Utah, Devin Booker in Phoenix and D’Angelo Russell in Minnesota.

Darius Garland had a solid season as the Cavs’ starting point guard, as he posted career-highs with 17.4 points, 2.4 rebounds and 6.1 assists while shooting 45.1 percent from the field and 39.5 percent from 3-point range.

Rubio explained his ability to build a relationship with younger players and how the decision to become ‘more than they are’ is strictly their choice.

(via Akron Beacon Journal):

“It’s more on them to ask,” Rubio said on Cavs’ media day. “They won’t listen until they ask or need to. You can be saying a lot of things, but the message won’t be received until they’re ready.

“For that, you can’t skip the process. Just a few players become All-Stars the first or second year. It takes time to really settle your talent to the court and really get yourself.

With Darius … the second year, he had a really huge improvement. Does that improvement stop there? It’s on him. Of course, it’s on us to really help him become a better player, but it’s on him to really want it more and don’t be satisfied to just become who he was last year,” the Spaniard concluded.

Garland’s improvement was dramatic from his rookie season; however, the young Cleveland Cavaliers could not improve their place in the East, as they ended up with one of the worst records in the league.

Rubio is hoping to help the Cavs change direction, even though the road to success may have many obstacles in the way for Cleveland, especially with such a young core in place.
