For the first time in a long time, the New York Knicks appear to be committed to a rebuild. They didn’t fall into the trap of trading or signing a faded star to grab the headlines and instead drafted two players with plenty of potential with their first-round picks.
In the past the Knicks have acquired players like Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, Baron Davis and countless others rather than holding onto their draft picks and developing their young players.
This offseason the Knicks did the opposite of what they usually do. They acquired draft picks, made low-risk signings and finally appear to have a head coach who can lead this young team.
While the team has only played three games under Tom Thibodeau, their effort and willingness to compete and defense are refreshing after years of lackluster performances.
In their last game, the Knicks crushed the Bucks. No, that isn’t a typo, it was the youthful Knicks who put on a clinic against the team that finished with the best record in the NBA last season.
Julius Randle was distributing the basketball, Frank Ntilikina was daring 3’s Mitchell Robinson dominated the paint.
It’s been a long time coming but it appears the Knicks are finally heading in the right direction. That may not mean a postseason appearance this season or even next season but that’s all right.
After years of being the laughingstocks of the NBA the New York Knicks finally appear to have a future that their fans can look forward to.
