It’s been a wild few weeks for American point guard Ameer Jackson. The 26-year-old, who hails from New Jersey, was all set to head back to Qatar for a second season with Al-Khor less than a month ago but he will be flying to Iraq instead, where he is expected to join the Ghaz Al-Shamal (North Gas) squad in the Iraqi Basketball League.

Speaking exclusively to Talkbasket.net, Jackson revealed he wasn’t able to return to Qatar due to passport delays exacerbated by a COVID-19 spike in the region. He now expects to head out to Iraq in early December, in time to prepare for the upcoming season -the campaign tips off on the 19th.

The former Winston-Salem State University guard says he’s signed a deal for a single season and, while his course has changed, the goal remains the same. In a previous interview with Talkbasket.net, Ameer claimed to be bent on getting a tryout with an NBA Summer League team.

“Right now just want to provide for my family and build a strong CV overseas but I definitely want to play in a summer league, show my talents and hopefully land a contract,” he said back in October.

Jackson’s basketball journey has taken him to Romania, Qatar, Tunisia, and now Iraq. He led the Qatari league in scoring during his stint with Al-Khor, registering 24.3 points per game. He’s hoping to do just as well in this new chapter.
