San Antonio Spurs legend and assistant coach Tim Duncan is stepping away from full-time coaching, according to Marc Stein of The New York Times.

Duncan spent his only season as an assistant coach on Gregg Popovich’s staff this past season.

The belief within the Spurs organization was always a one-year stint on the bench for Duncan, who is now expected to return to his previous post-retirement role where he made frequent visits to the team’s practice facility to provide player development assistance to various players, according to Stein.

It’s unknown if Duncan will get back into coaching in the future.

Duncan, 44, served one game as the interim, acting head coach back on March 3 when Popovich missed a game due to personal reasons and picked up a win against the Charlotte Hornets.
