The current state of affairs in Ukraine has prompted FIBA Europe to begin talks in Munich with the Ukrainian Basketball Federation and the Eurobasket Organising Committee about next year’s tournament.
The meetings were said to have taken place in a ‘friendly’ environment as the organisers for Eurobasket 2015 updated FIBA Europe leaders with the situation in Ukraine, which has seen mass protests in several cities, mainly the capital Kiev due to the ousted President Viktor Yanukovych deciding to pull out of a treaty with the EU, an agreement many felt would have paved the way for Ukraine to join the union. It looked like Yanukovych was going to sign the agreement before performing a U-turn, which has made the Ukrainian people bitterly disappointed.
A reported 77 people have been confirmed dead in the Ukraine.
More meetings are planned over the coming months and, as FIBA Europe have stated: they will continue to monitor the situation closely. A detailed report will, however be presented to the FIBA Europe Board, which will assess the situation further in its next meeting, in Munich at the end of March.
