He might have been disappointed that he didn’t win the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award, but LeBron James is still in a giving mood.

The reigning NBA MVP, who came second to Memphis’ Marc Gasol in the race to that award is trying to raise money for families affected by the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut in December of last year by auctioning off the sneakers he wore against the Washington Wizards on December 15, the day after the tragedy occurred.

The proceeds of this auction, which runs through to Saturday will benefit the Newtown Memorial Fund, through the LeBron James Family Foundation.

Miami Heat forward James’ signature is on one of the shoes, and an inscription of “vs. Wizards 12/15/12 Never forget!!” is on the other. The auction is expected to generate at least $5,000.
