We are used hearing the name JJ Redick but where did the letters ‘JJ’ come from in the name of one of the best shooters in the NBA? One would think it’s initials but it’s not.

The official name of the New Orleans Pelicans’ guard is Jonathan Clay Redick. As it turns out, Redick’s twin sisters called him JJ while he was still a baby and the name stuck to him for the rest of his life.

The 35-year-old veteran revealed that nobody calls him by his official name, Jonathan, except for his grandmother.

Per Jim Eichenhofer of NBA.com:

“My name is JJ, but it’s not JJ,” a smiling Redick said. “When I was a baby, people would ask, ‘What’s that baby’s name? He’s very handsome! He’s so good-looking!” he continued, jokingly. “My sisters would holler at me, ‘JJ!’ So it stuck. My earliest memories in life, from when I was three years old, I was always (called) JJ.”
