A quick news update as we continue the build-up to Eurobasket 2013.

Bauermann goes to Poland

Former Germany coach Dirk Bauermann has agreed to coach Poland in Slovenia this coming summer.

This will be Bauermann’s fifth straight Eurobasket finals but his first outside of Germany. He takes over from Ales Pipan, who has landed the job at FYR of Macedonia.

Bauermann’s finest hour came when he led Germany to the gold medal game in Belgrade at Eurobasket 2005 but they lost out to Greece in the final.

His last Eurobasket in 2011 was unsuccessful as Germany, led by a clearly fatigued Dirk Nowitzki could only reach the second stage before being eliminated by the hosts Lithuania in Vilnius.

Bauermann’s final statement was Nowitzki will play for Germany again and it is a comment he continues to stand by.

This is a new chapter for the veteran German though as he takes over a Poland side determined to do better than their last showing in 2009; a Eurobasket that they hosted but fell in the second round in Lodz.

The 56-year-old will be presented in-front of Polish media sometime this week.

Poland have been drawn in Group C, alongside hosts Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Georgia, Croatia and champions Spain.
