There will be a repeat of last year’s BBL Trophy Final in the last eight after an action-packed opening to the competition.

Leicester Riders avenged their earlier defeat to Glasgow Rocks with a 74-81 success at the Emirates Arena behind a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds from Pierre Hampton.

“We’re so happy to get through to the next round,” said Riders head coach Rob Paternostro.

“We battled all the way through and defensively, we made some big stops to get the job done and held them to 30 in the second half.

“We are looking forward to being at home in the next round and it should be a great game.”

Rocks back-court duo Hayden Lescault and Neil Watson combined for 43 points in the loss with Kieron Achara absent as they now look ahead to this Sunday’s BBL Cup Final.

Leicester will meet Newcastle Eagles in the Quarter-Finals after the Eagles had recorded a comfortable 67-100 victory away at Derby Trailblazers on Saturday.

There was an upset caused by one of the four non-BBL sides as Essex Leopards held off Manchester Giants for an impressive 86-84 victory.

Former BBL players Darrell Bethune and Mike Martin netted 32 and 20 points respectively in the win and the Leopards will take on Plymouth Raiders again after the Devon-based side eased past Boroughmuir Blaze in a 74-108 win.

Bristol Flyers avoided another upset after rallying from 14 points down to beat Division 1 side Reading Rockets 74-85 on the road with Aaron Cosby top scoring with 18 points.

Another team winning away from home on Sunday were Cheshire Phoenix as they raced out of the blocks on their way to a 68-82 success over Leeds Force behind a 23-point haul from Earl Brown.

Also, on Friday, Worcester Wolves drained 14 triples in a convincing 99-68 win against Sheffield Sharks as Danny Huffor exploded for a 31-point haul.

Two games in the BBL Championship also took place with Newcastle extending their lead at the top with a 116-93 home win over Cheshire Phoenix before Bristol claimed an important 93-72 triumph against Manchester Giants.
