Jalen Duren has until 11:59 p.m. ET on Thursday to determine his immediate future with the Detroit Pistons, with two significantly different contractual options available.

The center can accept Detroit’s fully guaranteed five-year, $200 million proposal or sign a one-year qualifying offer worth $9.6 million, which would allow him to enter unrestricted free agency next summer.

Duren is eligible for a maximum five-year contract valued at approximately $287 million, considerably more than the Pistons’ current offer.

If he chooses the qualifying offer and subsequently lands a four-year maximum agreement with another organization next offseason, his combined earnings over the next five seasons would slightly surpass $200 million.

However, such a strategy would involve substantial financial risk and represent an unprecedented approach for a player of Duren’s standing.

Detroit has already removed the weight-related conditions initially discussed as part of its long-term proposal, leaving the $200 million agreement fully guaranteed.
