Barcelona have added guard Umoja Gibson to their revamped roster, announcing the signing of the American playmaker to a two-year contract on Thursday, July 16. Gibson joins the Spanish club after a strong 2025-26 campaign with Cedevita Olimpija, where he established himself as one of the EuroCup’s most productive guards.

The 28-year-old guard led Cedevita in EuroCup scoring and assists last season, averaging 16.3 points, 4.7 assists and 2.3 rebounds in 18 games. He shot 45.1% from the field, 39.8% from three-point range and 86.7% from the free-throw line while posting a team-best 17.8 Performance Index Rating.

Gibson also produced consistently in the ABA League, averaging 15.5 points, 5.1 assists and 1.7 rebounds in 24 games. He connected on 50% of his field-goal attempts and 35.7% of his three-point attempts, showing his ability to create offense while maintaining efficiency.

His 2025-26 season included a standout performance on January 7, when Gibson recorded a game-high 30 points and five assists in a Cedevita Olimpija victory.

Barcelona’s move comes as the club continues reshaping its roster after a season in which it finished ninth in the EuroLeague regular-season standings with a 21-17 record. The team reached the play-in range but fell short of advancing to the playoffs, leading to significant changes during the offseason.

The club has already added Olivier Nkamhoua, Justin Robinson and Josh Nebo while moving on from several veterans. Jan Vesely retired, while Miles Norris, Myles Cale, Juani Marcos, Willy Hernangomez, Tomas Satoransky, Youssoupha Fall, Nicolas Laprovittola and Will Clyburn departed. Barcelona also parted ways with head coach Xavi Pascual as part of the broader transition.

Gibson gives Barcelona another perimeter option following the departure of several ball-handlers. In the 2025-26 EuroLeague season, Kevin Punter was the team’s leading scorer at 14.8 points per game, while Nicolas Laprovittola averaged 3.9 assists and Tomas Satoransky averaged 4.2 assists before leaving the club.

The former Oklahoma, North Texas and DePaul guard began his professional career with BG Gottingen in Germany during the 2023-24 season before joining Spartak Office Shoes in the ABA League in 2024-25. He averaged 9.5 points, 3.1 assists and 1.5 steals in 24 ABA games that season.
