Although Sean Sweeney is often viewed as a defensive-minded coach, the Magic do not believe that label accurately reflects his full coaching profile.

Orlando finished 18th in offensive rating this season while also seeing its defense decline from a top-three unit to 13th in the league. The organization believes Sweeney can help improve both areas.

“Sean’s been an offensive coach, too, so I don’t know how those tags get slapped on people,” Magic president Jeff Weltman said.

He explained that successful coaching often comes down to fundamentals and accountability.

“But a lot of it comes down to basic principles and teaching the game in a way that the players have to adhere to. And I think he’s had success doing that in the places that he’s been.”
