Joe Ingles has officially signed a two-year contract with Melbourne United, marking a return to Australia after 12 NBA seasons.
The 38-year-old veteran began his professional career in Melbourne with the South Dragons before eventually building a lengthy NBA career with the Utah Jazz, Milwaukee Bucks, Orlando Magic, and Minnesota Timberwolves.
“Coming home to Melbourne feels incredibly special,” Ingles said in the club’s statement.
“To return to where my professional career began almost 20 years ago is something I don’t take for granted,” Ingles added. “Melbourne has always felt like home.”
Although his on-court role decreased over the past two seasons with Minnesota, Ingles said he still feels capable of helping a team compete at a high level.
“I still love competing, I still love the game, and I believe I can genuinely help this group win,” Ingles said.
The Australian forward also leaves behind an accomplished international career, having represented the Boomers in four FIBA World Cups and five Olympic Games, including Australia’s bronze-medal run at the Tokyo Olympics.
Across 750 NBA regular-season games, Ingles averaged 7.7 points, 3.5 assists, and 3.0 rebounds while shooting 40.9 percent from three-point range.
