Detroit visits Charlotte on Friday, April 10, at Spectrum Center with the Pistons sitting at 58-22 and first in the Eastern Conference. The Hornets are 43-37 and ninth in the East, so the matchup carries different stakes for each side even before the injury report comes into play.
Detroit listed Kevin Huerter as questionable because of illness. If he is unable to go, the Pistons lose one of their cleaner perimeter floor-spacers, and that matters in a lineup built around Cade Cunningham’s playmaking and Jalen Duren’s interior finishing.
Huerter has averaged 8.4 points this season while shooting 28.3% from three-point range, but his value goes beyond scoring. He gives Detroit another guard who can pull defenders away from Cunningham, who is averaging 24.4 points and 9.9 assists, and that spacing can change how teams load up in the half court.
The Pistons also have Isaac Jones and Wendell Moore Jr. ruled out on two-way G League assignments. That leaves Detroit relatively stable in its main rotation, especially after Tuesday’s 137-111 win over Milwaukee, but Huerter’s status remains the key swing factor.
Charlotte’s report is longer, with Tosan Evbuomwan, PJ Hall, Liam McNeeley, Antonio Reeves and Tidjane Salaun all out on assignment or with a fracture. The good news for the Hornets is that Coby White is probable despite left groin soreness, which gives them a much-needed backcourt option.
White has played in only 19 games, but he is still producing 15.7 points and 3.2 assists per game, and his shot-making gives Charlotte another creator alongside LaMelo Ball, who is averaging 20.0 points and 7.1 assists.
This is also the third meeting between the teams this season, and Detroit has won both prior matchups, 112-86 at home in December and 110-104 on the road in February.
Charlotte is coming off a 113-102 loss at Boston and a 122-108 win at Minnesota before that. Detroit, meanwhile, just beat Milwaukee and has a clear chance to finish strong if its rotation stays intact.
