The Detroit Pistons continued their push toward the top seed in the Eastern Conference on Saturday, defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves 109-87 at Target Center in Minneapolis.
Detroit improved to 54-20 with the victory and maintained its cushion atop the East standings. The Pistons entered the night with a multi-game lead over the Boston Celtics and have now won nine of their last 11 games.
Tobias Harris led the visitors with 18 points on efficient 7-of-10 shooting while helping set the tone offensively. Detroit relied on balanced production throughout the roster with seven players scoring in double figures.
Daniss Jenkins and Ronald Holland II each scored 13 points. The Pistons shot 52% from the field (43-for-82) and recorded 28 assists while controlling the pace for most of the night.
Jalen Duren added 10 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. Detroit also dominated the glass with a 52-38 rebounding advantage.
Cade Cunningham missed his sixth consecutive game due to a collapsed lung, but Detroit’s depth continued to carry the offense. Paul Reed contributed 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench, while Kevin Huerter added 11 points.
The Pistons created early separation in the opening quarter. Reed scored six quick points on two free throws and two dunks, and Caris LeVert knocked down a pair of fadeaway jumpers as Detroit built a 33-24 lead.
Minnesota briefly closed the gap before halftime. Donte DiVincenzo scored all the points during a 10-2 Timberwolves run that cut the deficit to 49-44 at the break.
Detroit regained control after halftime by tightening its defense and limiting Minnesota’s shot quality. The Timberwolves finished the game shooting a season-low 32% from the field (27-for-85).
Minnesota also struggled from long range, converting just 9 of 43 attempts from three-point range. Detroit’s defensive pressure forced difficult attempts and disrupted the Timberwolves’ offensive rhythm.
DiVincenzo led Minnesota with 22 points and five three-pointers. Rudy Gobert recorded 14 points and 12 rebounds for the home team.
Julius Randle added 11 points but shot just 2-for-13 from the field. Naz Reid finished with eight points on 3-of-15 shooting as Minnesota struggled to generate consistent scoring.
The Timberwolves were again short-handed. Anthony Edwards missed his sixth straight game due to right knee inflammation, while forward Jaden McDaniels and guard Ayo Dosunmu were also unavailable.
Detroit gradually extended its lead throughout the second half behind steady ball movement and rebounding. The Pistons finished with a 10-9 edge in blocks and consistently limited Minnesota to one shot per possession.
The win strengthened Detroit’s position at the top of the Eastern Conference as the regular season enters its final stretch.
The Pistons will travel to face the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday. Minnesota will host the Dallas Mavericks the same night.
