Detroit Pistons point guard Cade Cunningham has been diagnosed with a collapsed lung, according to NBA insider Shams Charania, who tweeted on Thursday, March 19, that Cunningham is expected to miss an extended period, sources told ESPN.

Cunningham, 24, has been central to Detroit’s success this season, averaging 24.5 points, 9.9 assists, and 5.6 rebounds over 61 games. His absence comes as the Pistons hold a 49-19 record, the top seed in the Eastern Conference.

A collapsed lung, or pneumothorax, occurs when air enters the space between the lung and chest wall, causing the lung to partially or fully deflate. In basketball, this injury can severely limit breathing, stamina, and physical contact, making competitive play unsafe until fully healed.

Detroit has relied heavily on Cunningham’s playmaking and scoring. Jalen Duren and Tobias Harris are likely to see increased roles in his absence, with Duren averaging 19 points and 10.6 rebounds and Harris contributing 13.2 points per game. Duncan Robinson and Isaiah Stewart could also see more minutes as the Pistons adjust rotations.

Cunningham’s injury comes during a critical stretch of the season. Detroit is set to face the Washington Wizards on March 19 and the Golden State Warriors on March 20, games that may test the team’s depth without their star guard. The Pistons have split their last ten games 5-5, highlighting the importance of maintaining momentum despite key injuries.

Medical teams typically monitor collapsed lungs closely, with recovery times ranging from a few weeks to months depending on severity. Rest and limited physical activity are essential, and return timelines for NBA athletes vary based on progress in lung function and conditioning.

Detroit’s Eastern Conference lead remains strong, with Boston and New York trailing at 46-23 and 45-25, respectively. However, losing Cunningham could affect the team’s performance in tight matchups as the playoffs approach. The Pistons have clinched a postseason berth, but the absence of their primary floor leader will require strategic adjustments.
