Kristaps Porzingis is approaching a key decision point, as he’s set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer unless he signs an extension beforehand.

According to Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area, the Golden State Warriors have been evaluating Porzingis in recent weeks, while the big man himself has been weighing whether he wants to stay with the team long term.

Early signs indicate Porzingis has had a positive experience with the organization, especially highlighting the impact of Rick Celebrini, the team’s head of sports medicine and performance – a notable factor given Porzingis’ injury history.

“Rick’s amazing,” the player said Thursday after practice. “Rick is the GOAT, man. Really. I’m very happy with these guys, and I’m sure they will keep me on the same path.”

Porzingis has played in seven of the Warriors’ last nine games and believes he is getting closer to handling back-to-back appearances. Golden State still has two sets of back-to-backs remaining this season.

“I think it’s a conversation,” Porzingis said. “I don’t know yet if I will get the chance, but maybe. Maybe. Doing pretty good and recovering well. I’m still not playing super-high minutes, obviously, but the better I feel, the better I start to look.

“I’ll probably earn more minutes and then probably after that, the next step is to get a chance on a back-to-back. That’s what I’m working towards.”

Latvian big man has played 10 seasons for 6 teams, including the Mavericks and Knicks. He has averaged 19.5 points and 7.6 rebounds in 527 regular-season games.

He was selected to play in 1 All-Star game, and has won 1 NBA championship.
