Orlando Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley highlighted the importance of teamwork and execution following a 111-107 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Thursday at the Kia Center. “That shot was big time. For at the end of the game, you know, they’re coming back. They made a push. For us to have the wherewithal to touch the paint, move it side to side, swing, swing, extra pass, step into it with confidence. That’s what’s needed. That’s how we have to play,” Mosley said, reflecting on Jalen Suggs’ late-game 3-pointer.
Mosley emphasized the boost a win provides to team morale, stating, “It’s better to learn lessons in a win than in a loss. We got the job done and, you know, it was not pretty at the end of the day… but again, to get the win and find a way through it all, that’s important right now for us.”
Addressing defensive challenges, Mosley noted, “DeMar DeRozan got himself going early. Now a lot of those were tough twos. We fouled him a bit too much. Plowden got himself going and had a heck of a game. They got us on some cuts early on, offensive rebounds… we’ve got to clean those up and continue to get better, especially down this last nine-game stretch.”
The coach also praised the Magic’s resilience in tight situations, adding, “Finding a way. I think that’s what it comes down to, finding a way. He said 95-95. We made a little push, got ourselves going. Our ability just to find a way down the stretch, whether that’s moving and sharing the basketball, finding the option for Dez and P in the pick and roll… those are important pieces.”
Mosley singled out Paolo Banchero’s leadership, noting, “That was big for us for him to be able to come out and do that, to take on the challenge. DeRozan got himself going early… getting guys involved, attacking the basket, getting to the free throw line, that’s what we’re going to continue to ask him to do.”
The coach stressed body language as a key factor in sustaining effort and energy, saying, “Body language is huge. The joy that you have for playing the game, the excitement you have for your teammate. Defensive assignment, communicate with your teammate, but lift them up. I think body language is gigantic for us and the ability to get this win.”
Mosley also reflected on maintaining focus on the team’s process despite the streak, stating, “The intent was definitely there for our guys, wanting to do the little things… other times it’s been we’ve been a step slow, not into the ball like we needed to be, but tonight I think our intent was there. The guys being able to see that is what’s important.”
Looking ahead to Orlando’s matchup in Toronto, Mosley underlined preparation and focus: “Our ability to recognize that to play the same way… our communication’s got to be at a high level and we’ve got to be tied together, especially in that arena because it’s loud and they got a great fan base.”
Thursday’s win snapped a six-game skid for the Magic. Paolo Banchero recorded 30 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists, while Desmond Bane added 23 points. Sacramento’s DeMar DeRozan scored 33 points with 11 assists, and Daeqwon Plowden contributed 23 points. Orlando now sits in a three-way tie for eighth in the Eastern Conference, with the playoff push intensifying in the season’s final stretch.
