Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson addressed a 130-120 loss to the Dallas Mavericks, citing defensive shortcomings. “Very, very similar game…just too permissive on the defensive end…inexcusable defensive effort today,” he said.
Atkinson emphasized the importance of energy and focus. “Their energy level was higher…way too many mental breakdowns…combine the physical and mental, and that’s how you give up 130.”
He reflected on prior performances, noting inconsistencies. “We held Dallas to 105 points the other night…something we got to figure out…a lot of factors,” he explained, adding that lineup adjustments also played a role.
Turnovers and defensive spacing drew sharp critique. “Massive live ball turnovers are death…if you have a live ball turnover above the free throw line, it’s probably going to be a layup…lack of focus, not great spacing,” Atkinson said.
Point-of-attack defense was another concern. “It really comes down to guarding the ball…they’re beating us off the dribble…never really adjusted to their speed,” he noted after Dallas utilized a smaller, faster lineup.
Atkinson also praised Max Strus’ season debut. “After seven months without playing an NBA game…maybe the best I’ve seen with that period of absence…first couple threes were great,” he said, highlighting a positive amid a difficult outing.
The Cavaliers allowed 35 assists on 46 Dallas field goals, showing gaps in ball pressure. “You have to control the screen, slow up the screener, be into the ball…we were detached,” Atkinson said, describing how Dallas capitalized on defensive lapses.
Cleveland trailed in the third quarter as the Mavericks built momentum. Cooper Flagg scored 27 points with 10 assists, and Naji Marshall added 25, lifting Dallas to a second-half surge after snapping a seven-game losing streak against the Cavaliers.
Atkinson summarized the challenge ahead. “You combine physical issues, mental breakdowns, spacing, and turnovers…we need to be better to compete in the playoffs,” he said.
Cleveland returns to action Tuesday at Milwaukee, while Dallas travels to New Orleans on Monday.
