Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla spoke at length after Sunday’s 109-98 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, emphasizing both defensive execution and individual contributions. “I don’t think we limited their shooting. I thought they missed open shots,” Mazzulla said, noting that the team’s transition defense and keeping opponents off the free throw line were key in the first half.

Mazzulla praised Jayson Tatum in his second game back from a torn Achilles, saying, “It was good. He gave the game what it needed… both ends of the floor had a couple good defensive possessions, rebounded for us, sort of gave the game exactly what it needed.” On Tatum’s defensive performance over two games, Mazzulla added, “Rebounding is important. Individual defense is important… once you step between those lines, you’ve got to rebound, defend, and compete, and he’s doing that.”

The coach highlighted Derrick White’s underrated impact, explaining, “You don’t have a ton of access to the advanced analytics… D-White’s a connector… he gets the ball where it needs to get to. He has a clear understanding of situational awareness on both ends of the floor… highly competitive, cares about winning.”

Mazzulla also singled out Payton Pritchard and Jaylen Brown for their offensive contributions in the second half. “I thought Payton and Jaylen just made big-time plays… inside the three-point line… JB’s third quarter was great. Big play where they blitzed Payton and he stepped through and hit Neemy… we get an open three from there.”

Baylor Scheierman’s consistency and competitive mindset drew praise as well. “He doesn’t care about starting. He doesn’t care about anything except competing… takes a ton of pride in that… you kind of see stuff like that,” Mazzulla said, underscoring the importance of players contributing regardless of role.

On mid-range execution, Mazzulla stressed adaptability, saying, “You just have to give the game what it needs… we got some good two-on-ones… when you’re playing against physicality, you have to give the game what it needs, and those two guys did a great job.”

The Celtics’ balanced attack featured Jaylen Brown with 23 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists, while Tatum added 20 points in 27 minutes. Pritchard scored 18, and Scheierman recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards. Boston’s defense held Cleveland to 2-of-22 from three in the first half, limiting Donovan Mitchell to 30 points on 9-of-18 shooting.
