Vassilis Spanoulis has stepped down as head coach of AS Monaco, according to a tweet from Matteo Andreano on Saturday, March 7. The club’s board of directors has not yet confirmed whether it has formally accepted his resignation.

Spanoulis was absent from Monaco’s French league game against Cholet on Saturday, marking his first missed appearance with the team this season. He took over Monaco in 2024 after coaching Peristeri Athens from 2022 to 2024 and also serves as head coach of the Greece national team.

Monaco currently holds a 16-14 record in the 2025-26 EuroLeague regular season, ranking ninth with a +112 point differential. The team has won nine home games and seven on the road, but enters a challenging stretch with a 3-7 record in its last ten outings.

Key contributors this season include Mike James, averaging 18.8 points and 6.7 assists per game, and Alpha Diallo, who adds 14.1 points and 4.3 rebounds. Daniel Theis has provided consistent interior production with 9.6 points and 5.2 rebounds per contest, while Elie Okobo contributes 10.9 points and 4.4 assists per game.

The resignation comes amid a severe financial crisis for Monaco. Players had gone unpaid for December and January, prompting a strike threat. Owner Aleksej Fedorychev has struggled to provide funding, reportedly linked to financial consequences from the Russia-Ukraine war.

On March 6, the Principality of Monaco intervened with a €2.5 million emergency injection to cover urgent debts, including player salaries and social security contributions. A court-appointed receiver is now auditing the club ahead of a critical hearing in April.

Financial instability has led to transfer bans, preventing the registration of new players such as Cory Joseph, and a €300,000 EuroLeague fine. Monaco also faces legal scrutiny over a €4.8 million sponsorship deal with the Democratic Republic of Congo, under investigation for possible money laundering and corruption.
