The Phoenix Suns narrowly escaped with a 118-116 victory over the New Orleans Hornets on Friday night.
First-year lottery selection Khaman Maluach delivered his most impactful performance yet, recording a career-best five blocked shots while playing a season-high 20 minutes.
Entering the game, he had totaled just 10 blocks across his previous 27 appearances.
Head coach Jordan Ott said the expanded role has helped the rookie grow more comfortable on the floor.
“The biggest thing is just that he knows he’s getting consistent minutes,” Ott said.
“Hopefully, the first-game jitters of being in there were out after last night. Doesn’t change, we wouldn’t put you in there if we didn’t believe in you, and we’re going to continue to help him.”
Maluach has averaged 1.9 points, 1.8 rebounds and 0.5 blocks in 28 games this season.
