Kawhi Leonard praised the Los Angeles Clippers’ offensive and defensive efforts in Sunday’s 137-117 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans. “Penetrating the basketball, knocking down open threes tonight, getting out in transition… got some stops early. That helped us a lot getting some easy baskets,” Leonard said.
Leonard reflected on maintaining the lead despite New Orleans cutting the deficit in the third quarter. “Once we caught up with our defense, we were able to keep getting the lead and going from there,” he said, noting how defensive adjustments fueled the Clippers’ second-half run.
The forward also stressed the importance of the win in a challenging stretch of games. “Very important… got to make sure everybody stay healthy, contribute to the wins, and take it one game at a time,” he explained.
On his personal health, Leonard reported progress following his ankle injury. “Yeah, I’m doing a lot better,” he said, signaling readiness to contribute in upcoming contests.
Leonard expressed excitement for Darius Garland’s return. “He’s happy to get back to play… it’s going to take some time to get his normal minutes back, but we’re happy to see him out there,” he said.
The Clippers’ faster style of play was another point Leonard discussed. “It’s always a challenge… once Darius gets back, we have to figure out rotations… different style… able to get turnovers and get out in transition and play at a faster pace has been great,” he said.
Leonard also praised the younger players, particularly Jordan Miller. “He’s able to get the playing time and expand his game… being aggressive, getting to the paint, knocking down threes… he had some good passes tonight, eight assists,” Leonard said.
Looking ahead to Monday’s road game against the Golden State Warriors, Leonard stressed focus. “We have to try to win… Golden State’s a great team with a championship pedigree… we got to come out focused and ready to play from the start because we are on the road,” he said.
Leonard led Los Angeles with 23 points, five assists, and three steals, while Jordan Miller added 19 points. Brook Lopez contributed 16 points, John Collins 15, and Derrick Jones Jr. 17 as the Clippers shot 54% from the field and 47% from three.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak and improved the Clippers to 28-31, giving them momentum heading into a key matchup with the Warriors, while the Pelicans fell to 19-43.
