Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen has been diagnosed with a right hip impingement following an MRI and will be reevaluated in two weeks, sources tell Shams Charania of ESPN. The injury occurred during Wednesday’s practice.

Markkanen also had imaging done on his right ankle after tweaking it in the same session, though Charania reports the scans came back clean.

When healthy, the Finnish star has played at a high level this season, averaging 26.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 34.4 minutes per game across 42 starts.

After appearing in Utah’s first 22 games, however, he has played in just 20 of the last 36 due to minor injuries and a seven-game illness absence in January.

With Jaren Jackson Jr. and Jusuf Nurkic already ruled out for the season, the Jazz have little incentive to push for wins as they aim to retain their top-eight protected 2026 first-round pick.

The team was recently fined $500K by the NBA for its handling of Markkanen and Jackson in two games.

Tony Jones of The Athletic initially reported that the NBA would send an independent doctor to review Markkanen’s MRI, but later deleted the post.

Multiple reporters, including Marc Stein of The Stein Line and Jones himself, clarified that the league will simply review the MRI results, which is standard under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
