Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka gave his team a “C” grade for the first half of the 2025-26 season, emphasizing that standings don’t tell the full story. Speaking to Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, Udoka noted, “Somewhere in the middle,” highlighting a gap between potential and consistency.

Udoka’s frustration stems from the team’s inconsistency, despite being in contention for home-court advantage in the Western Conference. “We played up and down to the level of our competition a little bit too much at times,” he said, pointing to wins over top-tier teams and losses to lower-ranked opponents.

The Rockets’ roster blends experienced stars like Kevin Durant, averaging 25.8 points per game, with young talent such as Alperen Sengun, who contributes 20.7 points and 9.4 rebounds. Udoka stressed that talent alone is not enough for playoff success, adding that consistency and effort are critical.

Injuries have tested Houston’s depth this season, with veterans Fred VanVleet and Steven Adams missing significant time. Udoka said the path to an “A” grade is not measured by seeding but by maintaining health and executing team principles. “Regardless of seeding… it doesn’t really matter as far as that. The big part is being as healthy as we can be and playing the right way,” he explained.

The Rockets rank in the top 10 in defensive rating, reflecting Udoka’s emphasis on intensity and attention to detail. He expects the team to sustain that level while minimizing lapses, particularly over the final 29 games, which serve as a test of culture and discipline.

Udoka singled out the need for proper execution under pressure, highlighting Sengun’s facilitation and the scoring efficiency of Durant and Amen Thompson. “It’s not really about the standings. It’s about how we’re playing and the growth we’re showing,” he said, emphasizing development over results.

As Houston sits fourth in the Western Conference at 33-20, Udoka’s leadership focuses on bridging the gap between flashes of brilliance and consistent performance. The final stretch will determine whether the Rockets can translate talent and potential into a sustainable contender.
