After the NBA revamped the All-Star 2026 format, it could be seen as a return to competitiveness during a season break in the upcoming seasons.

For context, the league held another mini tournament featuring three teams, including USA Stars, Stripes, and World teams, highlighting the growing international talent, young guns, and veterans.

While it ended up in the hands of the Stars, it has been a statement that they are currently running the league, with a mix of youth and experience.

The Stripes fell short despite a full roster of veterans, followed by the World, which brought excitement to fans with its matchups.

Why the new format brings excitement

International talent has been the fan favorite since its roots, as it was the underdog against Team USA.

Every year, the players outside America continue to evolve, such as Frenchman Victor Wembanyama, who almost beat Team USA in the 2024 Olympics, and Serbian Nikola Jokic, who is currently running the league and could earn his fourth MVP this season.

However, Team USA still prevails up until the championship round in this All-Star 2026.

Return of competitiveness

Fans’ demand is often considered regarding the potential revamp of another All-Star in the upcoming years to make it more interesting.

The East vs. West is classic, but some fans say the new era of players has been ruining competitiveness compared to the MJ-Kobe era, when tough defenses were common.

Although the NBA is still far from being back to that All-Star atmosphere, the innovation they had this weekend could be the start of modern competitive exhibition.

The recognition of international talent, while mixed, was one of the best things they did to avoid romanticizing American talent.
