James Harden addressed the business side of the NBA following Cleveland’s 138-113 win over the Washington Wizards on Feb. 11, saying the idea of long-term loyalty in today’s league is often misunderstood. “I mean, at the end of the day, we all look at it. I mean, it’s basketball and and the whole quote unquote loyalty thing is I think it’s overrated,” Harden said during his postgame press conference.
The veteran guard added context to his view of player movement and front-office decisions. “You know, I think this is a business at the end of the day and it’s a lot of money involved and a lot of decisions that has to be made,” he said.
Cleveland improved to 34-21 and remained fourth in the Eastern Conference after winning its fifth straight game, while the rebuilding Wizards fell to 14-39. Sam Merrill scored a career-high 32 points on 11-of-12 shooting, Donovan Mitchell added 30, and Jarrett Allen finished 8-for-8 from the field with 21 points and nine rebounds.
Harden recorded 13 points and 11 assists in 28 minutes, earning his second double-double in three games since arriving in a deadline trade that sent Darius Garland to the LA Clippers. “Even tonight like you know I shoot four shots but we win by 25 points that’s the most important thing,” he said. “I’m just here to win so whatever that looks like.”
The former MVP emphasized adjusting to a roster built around scoring depth and ball movement. “I understand what’s going on I understand this team and the dynamic of it and how many offensive weapons we have,” Harden said. “I want to play the right way I want to take shots when they’re necessary.”
His comments reflected Cleveland’s offensive balance, which produced 54% shooting and 30 assists against Washington. The newcomer highlighted the freedom he feels alongside Mitchell, explaining, “you just have as much as freedom as we both have the same freedom.”
The six-time All-NBA selection also praised the Cavaliers’ roster construction after major trades before the Feb. 5 deadline. “Given the depth, given the shooting, the athleticism, the versatility that we have. Yes,” Harden said when asked if the team has championship potential.
Cleveland’s offensive system relies on spacing, pick-and-roll options, and rim pressure, elements Harden discussed when describing Allen’s efficiency. “It’s not even about me unlocking. It’s about me just going out there and just doing what I do and things will just happen,” he said.
The veteran believes shared responsibility defines the group’s approach. “Whether I score take four shots or take 20 shots, we win the game, you know, who cares,” Harden said.
Despite the individual attention surrounding his arrival, Harden repeatedly stressed the larger goal. “So, for me it’s always about like I don’t lose focus of you know trying to compete for a championship,” he said.
