Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka does not anticipate the team pursuing a trade for a point guard, according to ESPN’s Michael C. Wright.
“We’ve always been confident and talked about our depth and relying on all these guys with Aaron [Holiday] and Jae’Sean [Tate] and guys that aren’t playing as much,” he said.
“We want to see what [Amen Thompson and Reed Sheppard] look like with a year of point guard play under their belt and getting Fred back eventually. For now, we want those guys to grow into that role.”
Rather than seeking outside help, the team has leaned into an offensive identity built around interior scoring, ranking seventh in the league in the share of points scored in the paint, while also emphasizing rebounding and solid, if not high-volume, three-point shooting.
That approach could be tested by big man Steven Adams’ Grade 3 ankle sprain, which may impact the club’s effectiveness on the offensive boards.
With Adams sidelined, Clint Capela is expected to step in as the main backup center, while Jabari Smith Jr. should see occasional time at the five in smaller lineups.
Both teams benefitted from last summer's Kevin Durant trade, plus more on the Rockets. https://t.co/Ow0oFnFW9H
