Trail Blazers head coach Tiago Splitter highlighted his team’s approach following Portland’s 132-116 win over the Los Angeles Lakers Saturday at Moda Center.
“Went home. So, I think it was kind of like a trap game where we had to bring a sense of urgency and do the right job…be focused and ready to go and be aggressive,” Splitter said on his team’s mindset entering the matchup.
Splitter emphasized that the team’s aggressiveness at the rim was strategic, not intentional foul-seeking. “We knew they were missing their bigs, so we tried to be aggressive and drive. Not like trying to get fouls, just be aggressive at the rim.”
The coach noted the gradual return of his key players is restoring his vision for the team. “Slowly we start to see that picture again…Jrue still getting in shape, Jeremy still not there, and Deni still out, but we are getting closer.”
Splitter praised Shaedon Sharpe’s performance, pointing to his offensive and defensive contributions. “He shot well from three…he’s giving us more effort on defense as well, getting a couple stops, couple steals, gambles…slowly he’s getting there where we want.”
He also highlighted Sidy Cissoko’s defensive impact. “Sidy got six deflections, got into their team, and was physical, tried to take a charge on LeBron James. That’s not an easy task, but he tried. Those are the winning plays you need.”
Splitter underlined the importance of Portland’s depth, noting bench players’ production. “You see Caleb Love scoring 22, Jerami Grant from the bench…that gives you a certain comfort. You can sub your starters and bring the bench, and they’re going to score, get stops…gives me confidence in those subs.”
Portland led by 14 at halftime and extended the margin to 24 late in the fourth quarter. Shaedon Sharpe led all scorers with 25 points, while Jerami Grant and Caleb Love added 22 each.
The Lakers struggled without Luka Doncic and Deandre Ayton, with Marcus Smart leaving the game in the fourth quarter after scoring 25 points. Drew Timme contributed 21 points off the bench, and LeBron James added 20 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists.
Portland improved to 20-22, winning seven of their last nine games, while Los Angeles fell to 24-15. The Trail Blazers face the Atlanta Hawks Monday, and the Lakers return home to host the Toronto Raptors Sunday.
